Toruń
Description:
Sailor’s Gate was erected in the mid-14th c., however its present form is the result of a thorough 19th c. reconstruction. The gate was the most important entrance to the city, and the route from it leads to St. Johns' parish church and then to the Old Town Square (Rynek Staromiejski). Here, to the sound of the bell, Tuba Dei, Polish kings arriving in Toruń were solemnly greeted. The mayors then handed over the keys of the city, and invited their guests to make themselves comfortable in the royal rooms in the Town Hall of the Old Town.
