Description:

The Renaissance granary on Piekary St is one of the most interesting of its type in Toruń. Built in the first half of the 17th c., the granary has eight spacious floors in a style resembling Dutch design. All the windows have ornamental frames, resembling the bags of filled with grain that used to be kept here.

It is worth looking at another nearby granary, built in the 14th c. in a Gothic style, which owing to its rich decoration is even more impressive than some burgher townhouses. The huge profits that Toruń residents made from long-distance trade encouraged, not only a great deal of care to be taken over their appearance, but even for townhouses to be reconstructed as spacious granaries. Many of them are found near the Vistula on Rabiańska St, while other granaries, Baroque, Renaissance and even Gothic, are preserved in Mostowa, Ciasna and Podmurna Streets. Some of them are still used as warehouses, whereas others have been adapted into hotels, museums and offices.
